What does Labour feel like? Can it be pain free?

Most of my clients achieve drug free births because of the amazing work they have put into going into hypnosis prenatally. Does this mean they feel nothing during labour?

No.

Pain free births have been mistaken to be feeling-less births. I have had clients who don't feel much until a much later part of the labour however they do feel sensations. The difference is that it does not come across as pain per se.

Sure there might be discomforts but they are often indicators of what we need to do for the body in order to open up. The discomforts can then be alleviated.

The Usual types of Pain that most women (without hypnobirthing) feel in childbirth

Sharpness or Searing pain

Some women report feeling like they are being sliced up in two. Searing pains can also come in at crowning as women who are filled with fear are tensed around their Vulva.

Period Cramps on steroids

Some women feel an increasingly ache on their uterus that does not seem to go away.

Back pains

Especially when babies are positioned with their back against yours. Such labours take a long time without the proper physical assistance.

What hypnobirthing mothers feel

Nothing

Some women do not feel anything for most part of the labour...

Pressure

Usually starting out as a slight period cramp like sensation..... With the confidence and ability to go into hypnosis, HypnoBirthing mothers find the pain dissipating with only the sensation of pressure remaining.

Dull aches

If there are achiness around the pelvic bone or back, I would often assist in releasing the tight muscles and provide advice on positions to assist in baby's position. A good one is an inversion, to help the fascia rehydrate, for the uterine ligaments to untwist and for the baby to reposition without pressure on his head!

I am also often massaging other parts of the body that can contribute to aches on seemingly unrelated parts.

Rising of the belly

Hypnobirthing mothers are able to sense the uterus rising during the opening phase, often filling them with wonder at the involuntary movement of the uterus bringing their baby into the world.

Euphoria

Sometimes they feel highs as their emotional state allow the huge influx of endorphins at certain points of labour. Did you know Endorphins are our body's natural pain killers, 100x more effective than morphine?
